Collaborative Projects with US Department of Energy

These projects are collaborations agreed with the US Department of Energy. They cover Safeguards topics of common interest.

Currently, SIR sector is involved in the following collaborations:

3D Surveillance for Item Monitoring

Collaboration project between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA) and Joint Research Centre

The aim of the project is to Design, implement and testing of a Laser Scanning System to provide immediate and continuous monitoring of the integrity of items. The security of an item is verified by determining that the target is still present and that its position has not changed.

Wireless Data Collection and Secure Transmission

Collaboration project between Sandia National Laboratories (USA) and Joint Research Centre

This project aims at evaluating the feasibility of employing wireless data acquisition and transmission in remote and unattended monitored systems for international Safeguards purposes. In order to make plant operators confident on wireless technologies, the following requirements must be satisfied:

1.      Wireless systems must be employed in a way to ensure non-interference with plant equipment.

2.      Data security must be ensured during both data acquisition and data transmission.
